James Slicer Purcell (“Slice”) Penny is a native of Charlotte, NC. He earned a BA in Psychology from Pfeiffer University in 2022, where he served as the non-traditional student representative in the Student Government Association and pastored Locust United Methodist Church in Locust, NC.
He recently graduated with a Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School (May 2025), where he was a fellow in the Thriving Rural Communities Initiative. Slice is a Provisional Elder in the Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church. He also serves on the Board of Trustees at Pfeiffer University. When he’s not at church, Slice is most likely spending time with his wife, Julie, or playing pickleball.
